Counselling with a trainee can be an appropriate option when that counsellor has been approved for client work, receives regular supervision and works within their competence. Suitability depends on the person seeking support as well as the counsellor. At Strive, a qualified counsellor assesses your needs before recommending supervised Core counselling.
What does counselling with a trainee mean at Strive?
Our Core service provides you with counselling with a trainee. Trainee counsellors are completing a placement while studying at Level 4 diploma or higher. Their training provider has deemed them proficient to work with clients. They are members of an ethical professional body, hold professional insurance and receive regular clinical supervision from a qualified and experienced therapist. Training is ongoing, and we describe that openly.
What does supervision of a trainee counsellor involve?
Clinical supervision gives a counsellor – regardless of whether they are a trainee counsellor or a qualified counsellor- a structured space to reflect on their work, consider ethical questions and recognise when a client may need something beyond their competence. It is part of responsible practice for counsellors at different career stages. A supervisor does not usually sit in on your session. Your counsellor will explain the confidentiality arrangements and their limits. At Strive, trainee counsellors are closely supported by our clinical lead counsellor, their supervisor and their tutors.
How does Strive decide whether Core is right for me?
A qualified counsellor conducts your initial assessment. We consider how things are for you now, any risks or support needs, the issues you want to explore and the kind of skills required. We also listen to your preferences. Core will not suit every situation. We may recommend a qualified Pro counsellor or another service if that offers a better fit.
Questions you are entitled to ask when counselling with a trainee
- What stage of training is my counsellor at, and what approach do they use?
- How often do they receive supervision?
- Have they worked with the kind of difficulty I am bringing?
- What happens if I do not feel comfortable with the match?
- How do confidentiality and its limits work?
You do not have to choose Core because it costs less. Pro is available at £50 per 50-minute session if you would prefer a qualified counsellor or if that level of experience is more appropriate for your needs.
The first step is a conversation
The £25 assessment lasts 30 minutes and gives you space to talk about your concerns before any matching decision. If you continue through a twelfth counselling session, the assessment fee is credited back. There is no obligation to continue after assessment.
